St Mary’s has fostered the intellectual, physical and spiritual development of its students to assist them to have successful careers and flourishing lives since its foundation in 1850. Our beautiful campus is situated in the grounds of the historic Strawberry Hill House, Twickenham, in close proximity to the National Archives in Kew and with easy access to central London.

Under its new Principal, Prof Philip Esler, St Mary’s will strengthen its mission to create new knowledge and to engage in activities in support of social cohesion and economic development in this exciting period of change for UK higher education.

St Mary’s provides a supportive and diverse environment for research students with a thriving postgraduate community and high levels of student satisfaction. There is a co-ordinated institutional postgraduate research student programme, with regular activities at University College and School level. In addition students have access to a range of research training seminars at the University of Surrey, and a wide range of provision across London-based institutions.

Studentship Areas: Applications are invited for PhD studentships at St Mary’s University College for 2011 in the following areas:

School of Education – three full-time scholarships in the areas of Religious Education, Physical Education, Sustainable Education, or Educational Leadership

School of Communication, Culture and Creative Arts – three part-time scholarships in the areas of: second language acquisition; anime/animation studies; gender representation in visual culture; horror, science fiction and cult film and television; audiences and fan cultures; CCTV and surveillance/crime and the media; popular music and counter culture; visual culture in Ireland

School of Management and Social Sciences – three full-time scholarships in the areas of interpersonal relationships; psychology of religion; emotions; clinical hypnosis; intergenerational  relationships; grandparenthood; effects of technology  on children’s cognitive and social development; experimental psychology in the area of action and perception; areas of developmental psychology and cognitive psychology

  • 2,000 word proposal (see application form for guidelines);
  • Names of two academic referees. Please ensure that referees have been contacted in advance of your application;
